Achilion Palace

1
Built in 1890 by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria. Achilleion Palace was devoted to Achilles, the hero who represented to the empress the Greek soul and beauty of the locals.  Entering the palace, all eyes are impressed by the wonderful roof fresco, by the Italian painter Galoppi, which symbolically depicts the Four Seasons and the Horae. In the background, a majestic marble staircase, with statues of Zeus and Hera at the bottom – is another distinctive item of the wealth and profusion of the palace.
Ernst Herter, a famous German sculptor has created works inspired by the mythology in the grounds around the palace. In the magnificent peristyle we can see the nine marble Muses together with statues of Apollo and the three Graces. Herter also made the famous Dying Achilles statue, the centrepiece of the Achilleion Palace Gardens, which Sissy was able to see from the peristyle.
